Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

An International Harvester survived the sinking too!

This is such a momentous occasion! Yorktown was sunk at Midway in 1942, and Enterprise was sadly scrapped in 1960. With Hornet’s discovery, the story of the Yorktown class carriers can finally close.

The Do Little raid is what the French military called all their offensives in WWII

The first one was a google image search. The next two can easily be found via navsource.org and the last two are from msnbc and npr. I love this kinda stuff!

Wow, great find! I wonder what happens next. The Wikipedia page states that the captain was the “last man on board” to abandon ship. Did everyone escape, or was he just the last living person to get out of there? I’m curious as to whether the ship is considered a war grave or not .

She’s m ore than 17,000 feet down. That’s more than three miles. Damn, the Pacific is deep.

That’s impressively intact ! It helps it was shot full of holes and torpedoed in an effort to scuttle, so it didn’t implode at that depth.

The tug is sitting like they just parked it. The cooling hose( ?) is still red with, what appears to be electrical tape.

140 men died on the Hornet. It was still afloat when the Japanese ended their assault though so an orderly evacuation of survivors was possible. The US Navy tried and failed to scuttle the ship, and left when Japanese ships arrived. The Japanese then finished it off.

Wonder if funding for Paul Allen’s lost ships project will dry up now that he’s died.

His rocket company announced big cuts last month, as I assume his heirs weren’t as keen to dump billions into what was something of a vanity project: Stratolaunch axes launch vehicle and rocket engine projects
